Raise the anchor!

We are in 1519. The Portuguese sailor Fernand de Magellan, convinced of the existence of a passage bypassing America, wishes to reach the islands of Indonesia and its precious spices from the west. Managing to convince the King of Spain to finance an expedition project, he heads straight for the unknown, armed with a fleet of five ships.

In 1522, only 18 of the 237 men who left with him returned safely. After 3 years of sailing in the most extreme conditions, they completed the very first circumnavigation of the globe. Available on Prime Video, the series Without limits traces this journey that changed history forever, through 6 episodes of an average of 40 minutes each.

A cast at the height of the event

Despite a beard and hair transforming him completely, it is Álvaro Morte, the brilliant Professor of La Casa de Papel, who is on the poster of Without limits. The one we saw in a few episodes of The Wheel of Time here embodies Juan Sebastián Elcano, the right arm of the great navigator Magellan. The latter is interpreted by Rodrigo Santoro, revealed in Love Actually and who lent his features to the terrible King Xerxes in 300, or to Hector Escaton in Westworld.

In addition to Beatriz (Bárbara Goenaga), Magellan’s wife, there are historical figures who were part of the epic: Pigafetta (Niccolò Senni), an Italian whose writings are one of the main sources testifying to this adventure, or well the mutinous captains Cartagena (Sergio Peris-Mencheta) and Mendoza (Adrián Lastra). The whole thing is directed by Simon West, director of Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Expendables 2: Special Unit.

An epic and historical tale!

If the story of the very first circumnavigation of the globe returns to center stage with Sans Limites, it is no coincidence since this feat is celebrating its 500th candle this year. The creators of the series have thus taken care to reconstruct the main events that marked the first circumnavigation, without forgetting to offer a good dose of spectacle and dramatic intensity, for our greatest pleasure!

It is clear that the context lends itself particularly well: the uncertainty of the crew to return alive, the particularly trying conditions of navigation, and the meeting with indigenous peoples having resulted in mutinies and bloody clashes . All this, without forgetting the conflict between Portugal and Spain as a backdrop. So, are you ready to embark on this exciting journey?

The 6 episodes of the Without limits series are now available in full on Prime Video.
