On Thursday, Chicago Bears finished their last day of mandatory minicamp. A handful of team personnel spoke to the media after practice. One that stood out was rookie wide receiver Velus Jones Jr. The third-round pick from this year’s draft spoke on numerous topics. In fact, he got things rolling by talking about one of his teammates in particular.

Darnell Mooney’s Praise of Velus Jones Jr.

One reporter mentioned Darnell Mooney’s unprompted comments about the rookie’s speed. When asked how he felt about a veteran like Mooney supporting him in that manner, Jones Jr. said he feels that his teammates believe and show faith in him.

“It just makes you, you know, keep striving for greatness,” Jones Jr. said of what the kudos mean to him. He also reciprocated the love, saying his teammates know that he supports them in the same way.

Role in the Offense

Next, Jones Jr. was pressed on how much has been done in the past six or seven weeks. Specifically, the different ways in which he can help the Chicago Bears’ offense. With a smile on his face, Jones Jr. said he’s been moving around a lot, especially during OTAs. But he also had a lot of balls thrown his way, which helped raise his confidence.

Connection with Justin Fields

Next, reporters asked Velus Jones Jr. about his connection with Justin Fields. The Tennessee product said working with Fields at minicamp has been a positive experience and they’ve been having normal conversations as well as picking each other’s brains. That dynamic has made things easier for him, as he enjoys knowing who his quarterback is off the field as well. Likewise, Jones Jr. also confirmed that his locker is right next to Fields’ stall.

As for what’s next, he will be heading down to Atlanta to work with Fields and Mooney for a team-building exercise that Fields is hosting.

Good Advice, Sign of Maturity

Velus Jones Jr. also discussed the importance of staying out of trouble, especially considering how big of targets athletes are for such situations.

“Stay around good company and watch who you have around you,” Jones Jr. elaborated.

Manifesting Greatness

The rookie mentioned how he visualizes running routes and catching passes. — especially of the touchdown variety from Justin Fields.

“I’m big on manifesting and so I can picture a lot great things this season. Even on certain plays and certain routes thrown by Justin.”

Picking His Jersey Number

Moving into lighter matters, reporters inquired about Velus Jones Jr.’s jersey number. He said the Bears assigned him No. 12, but equipment manager Tony Medlin did give him a call to present him a few options. Of course, Jones Jr. said he wanted No. 11, which he wore in college.

“Obviously, our number one guy Moon has number 11. So I was like 12.” Sorry not sorry, rookie.

When thinking about No. 12 in the orange and navy, Allen Robinson most recently comes to mind, which Jones Jr. acknowledged.

“I know Robinson was here the year before. And there was, you know, they probably thought I didn’t want that number and stuff like that. But I was like, I’m not Robinson. I’m Velus Jones Jr. You know that’s all that matters. Yeah, I will take number 12.”
