LG’s eco-friendly initiatives for a better future

According to a global health and wellness study conducted by NielsenIQ last year, people’s awareness of environmental issues and the negative effects they can have on our collective health, now and in the future, has never been so strong.

Recognizing the threat posed by climate change and global warming, more and more people are committed to recycling, reducing household waste and choosing products from brands that share their concern for the environment. LG, a company that continues to put the health of the planet first, is actively seeking solutions to global climate issues, leveraging its cutting-edge technologies to reduce carbon and greenhouse gas emissions while by increasing energy efficiency.

Reduction of emissions from the manufacturing process

First announced in 2019, LG’s Zero Carbon 2030 initiative aims to reduce the total amount of direct and indirect carbon emissions generated during the production process by 50% (compared to 2017 levels). In addition to its far-reaching 2030 initiative, LG last year became the first Korean company to join the Business Ambition for 1.5°C campaign, which unites businesses and government agencies in a global effort to achieve the “ net zero”. The campaign’s goals are based on scientific data established by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and include the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

With this in mind, LG has already made significant progress in reducing GHG emissions throughout the manufacturing process of home appliances. Changwon’s LG Smart Park, designated as a flagship factory by the World Economic Forum, plays a major role in reducing GHG emissions during production, while increasing energy efficiency by 30% compared to the old factory from Changwon. Among the many innovations in LG Smart Park that help reduce the company’s energy footprint are cutting-edge energy management solutions such as the Energy Storage System (ESS) and Heat Control. building energy (BECON).

Reduced Resource Usage with LG Inverter Technology

LG is also committed to helping consumers adopt a more environmentally friendly lifestyle by limiting greenhouse gas emissions and improving energy efficiency during the actual use of its home appliances. LG refrigerators, washing machines, dryers and air conditioners that adopt the company’s famous Inverter technology optimize electricity consumption by offering highly efficient operation.

Using less energy than conventional refrigerator compressors3 the company’s inverter linear compressor also won the ENERGY STAR Emerging Technology Award for reducing gas emissions. 4

Eco-responsible packaging and recycled plastics

Making eco-friendly changes to product packaging can also help protect our planet. LG has developed its own packaging design guidelines to reduce waste and move away from materials that can harm the Earth and people’s health. These guidelines mandate more minimal use of packaging materials to reduce overall packaging volume and reveal the company’s increased emphasis on reuse and recycling. All LG home appliances will soon feature eco-friendly packaging. The company has already reduced its annual polystyrene consumption by 19 tonnes by switching to polypropylene packaging for the outdoor units of its air conditioning systems.

Through various initiatives, solutions and cutting-edge technologies, LG will continue to reduce its impact on the environment and help create a better future for everyone.
