The San Francisco 49ers have faced some serious roster turnover with their offensive line, as left guard Laken Tomlinson went to the New York Jets in free agency, while center Alex Mack chose to retire after one season with the organization.
In addition, right tackle Mike McGlinchey is coming off a torn quadriceps injury that sidelined him for the second half of the 2021 NFL season, although head coach Kyle Shanahan believes the Notre Dame product should be ready for training camp.
Earlier this week, PFF’s Mike Renner conducted his offensive line rankings for 2022 with several tiers: Minor or no weaknesses(tier 1), high floor(tier 2), high-end potential(tier 3), at least one good tackle(tier 4), uninspiring(tier 5), and problematic(tier 6).
Renner placed the 49ers’ offensive line in the third tier, ranking them 14th overall amongst the NFL, and projected Trent Williams, Aaron Banks, Jake Brendel, Daniel Brunskill, and Mike McGlinchey as the starters from left to right.
“[Trent Williams and Mike McGlinchey] is one heck of a tackle duo, but the interior is a hodgepodge of unproven youngsters,” Renner wrote. “The player to keep an eye on is former second-round guard Aaron Banks, who played just five snaps as a rookie in 2021. But he’s a former second-rounder and has a golden opportunity to replace Laken Tomlinson on the left side.”
Renner ranked the 49ers’ offensive line as the second-best in the division, with the Rams coming in at No.11, and the Cardinals and Seahawks coming in at No. 25 and No. 32, respectively.
While left tackle Trent Williams was a first-team All-Pro in 2021, there are questions attached to each of the other four offensive line spots, justifying the ranking for now.

49ers minicamp notebook: Bosa, Ebukam rave about rookie Jackson; A happy but crowded D-Line room; Ryans on cornerbacks
Could the 49ers have a major steal on their hands in second-round pick Drake Jackson? That’s what it sounds like, based on comments from fellow defensive ends Samson Ebukam and Nick Bosa. Both players raved about Jackson on Wednesday, offering the type of high praise rookies don’t often receive from veterans at this stage of the game. Or, as Ebukam put it, “Damn. He’s good.” Read on for more comments on Jackson from Ebukam and Bosa, along with much more from the media sessions following Wednesday’s 49ers minicamp practice. There was plenty of talk about the defensive side of the ball, along with some comments from new 49ers special teams coordinator Brian Schneider. Check it out in this edition of 49ers Notebook. They

PFF: 49ers have strong edge-rushing depth, but D-line interior remains ‘potential weak point’
Samson Ebukam, Drake Jackson, Charles Omenihu, Kerry Hyder, and Kemoko Turay will all compete for playing time opposite San Francisco 49ers phenom, defensive end Nick Bosa. That’s a lot of depth along the edge. That depth helped the 49ers unit rank among Pro Football Focus’ “Elite” defensive lines in the league. However, San Francisco comes in at No. 6, behind the Los Angeles Rams, Washington Commanders, Green Bay Packers, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. What’s the reason for the 49ers not ranking higher on the list? It has to do with the uncertainty along the interior of the defensive line. While analyst Ben Linsey called Bosa “one of the best all-around edge defenders in the NFL,” there are question marks between the bookends. “Arik Armstead is

PFF: Kingsbury is the NFL’s 4th best head coach, and better than 49ers’ Shanahan
Either that person who is always hacking into people’s Facebook pages and sending fake friend requests has hacked into PFF (Pro Football Focus), or someone from Kliff Kingsbury’s family has been added to its editorial staff. In a PFF article released today, Kingsbury is listed as the fourth-best head coach in the NFL. Ahead of San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, and ahead of other head coaches like Sean McVay, Pete Carroll and Mike Tomlin. Kingsbury trails only Bill Belichick, John Harbaugh, and Andy Reid. You read that correctly. Kingsbury is the fourth-best coach in the NFL. Okay, stop laughing for a few minutes. NFL insiders predict 49ers will most likely release Jimmy Garoppolo
Dan Graziano reached out to NFL executives, coaches, and agents, asking about two quarterbacks—Baker Mayfield of the Cleveland Browns and Jimmy Garoppolo of the San Francisco 49ers. The Browns have a mess on their hands. They pulled off a blockbuster trade for Deshaun Watson, and the legal issues continue to pile on the talented quarterback. Mayfield, scorned, wants out and is unlikely to do the Browns any favors. “The Garoppolo situation has been less messy, other than the surgery,” one NFL executive told Graziano. “That makes you think, once he’s healthy, San Francisco has the
